The first thing you notice about the Epson Stylus SX218 when taking it out of the box is that its light, but it also feels well put together which is a change from the flimsy printers we have seen from Epson in the past. Setting up the printer to easy everything from installing the ink cartridges to installing it onto the PC is straight forward and simple. Talking of printer ink cartridges the Epson SX218 ink cartridges are reasonable compared to the other printers in this price range at £30 a set of four. Because the SX218 uses four individual Epson ink cartridges this also makes it more economical than the competitors machines as it means each colour cartridge can be changed independently of each other and no ink is wasted, unlike tri-colour single block cartridges. In terms of performance the SX218 also has the edge on its competitors with it class leading 5760 x 1440 dpi resolution which helps produce excellent print quality results for all types of documents from standard text to high resolution graphics and photographs. The SX218 also has scanning and photocopying facilities which although are not quiet as impressive as it print output they are still useful features and the photocopier in particular has a great PC-free functions which means it doesn’t need a PC in order to operate. Another of the SX218’s “PC-free” functions is direct printing from a memory card thanks to it built-in memory card reader which is a little tricky to use as the device has no LCD screen so picking and choosing which photos to print is a little tricky. In summary, Epson have down well to offer a printer with such high standards to the market at such a low price.
